Dulux – Plant Platform

Dulux

Project Overview:

Dulux needed more space for their building’s switchboards, as the current setup didn’t meet their needs. They required a secure switchboard room and an additional plant platform on top for storing compressors and allowing future plant expansion. Heighton was brought into design and build a solution that would solve these issues.

The Challenge:

The main challenge was the lack of space for the switchboards and compressors, as well as the need for future growth. The site where the new structure would be built also wasn’t fully prepared, with areas lacking a solid foundation (hardstand). On top of this, the construction had to be done during business hours without affecting Dulux’s production, which required careful planning to avoid disrupting their operations.

Fixing the Constraints:

Heighton had to come up with a solution that worked within the space limits and didn’t interfere with operations:

  • They needed to maximise the available space by building upwards, with a switchboard room below and a platform for compressors above.
  • The platform had to be strong enough to hold compressors and allow for future expansion.
  • A concrete slab needed to be poured to create a solid foundation for the new structure.
  • All work had to be done without disrupting Dulux’s day-to-day business.

Implementation:

Heighton approached the project by designing and constructing a sturdy plant platform that connected to the existing stair tower on the side of the building. This platform was built above the newly created switchboard room, which allowed them to maximise space and ensure there was enough room for the compressors, as well as any future equipment Dulux might need to add. Since the site wasn’t fully prepared, Heighton poured a new concrete slab in areas where there wasn’t a hardstand to provide a stable and durable base for the structure. Despite the complexities of working during Dulux’s operational hours, Heighton carefully planned the construction process to avoid any interruptions to the company’s production, ensuring a smooth and efficient build.

Results:

The new switchboard room and plant platform provide Dulux with the space they needed for their current operations and future growth. The project was completed without any impact on their production, and the facility now supports their long-term expansion plans.
